A GREENER BACK TO SCHOOL.....

Approx. 2.7 BILLION juice boxes end up in land fills each year!

This year, make a change and pack beverages in reusable bottles. Also, replacing paper/plastic lunch bags with eco-friendly reusable lunch totes is another great way to help cut down on landfill masses. For a more eco-conscious "single-serving snack", look for Organic items that are packaged in RECYCLABLE boxes or wrappers. Whole Foods has some great choices. Even better...make TRAIL MIX in bulk at home and pack in lunches using reusable containers.

Go to epa.gov/kids to find information on creating recycling programs in your school!

YOU CAN HELP SAVE OUR PLANET .....

Whether you care about saving our sea life, reducing global warming, or saving our forests, make this the year when you take action.

When asked the familiar question..."paper or plastic"?
Think of the consequences of either choice:

PAPER BAGS:

1) The production of paper bags causes 70% more pollution than plastic.

2) Each year, a single supermarket blows through over 60 million bags and 85,000 trees!

3) In 1999 more than 14 million trees were cut down to produce 10 billion paper bags that were used by Americans alone that year.

4) Manufacturing paper bags creates numerous byproducts that pollute waterways & produce greenhouse gases, which contributes to global warming.

PLASTIC BAGS:

1) Factories around the world manufacture 4 to 5 trillion plastic bags per year.

2) The U.S. alone goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually.

3) Worldwide approx. 4 billion plastic bags end up as litter each year. Tied end to end, that's enough to circle the earth 63 times!

4) Plastic bags don't "biodegrade", they break down into tiny toxic bits which contaminate soil & water. Fish eat it, mistaking it for plankton & it ends up on your dinner table & in your body.

5) Plastic bags are carried by wind & ocean currents to once pristine areas of the earth, choking wildlife that mistake them for food.
Countries like Taiwan, Bangladesh and South Africa now prohibit the bags entirely.

6) Plastic bags are made from petroleum, which when recycled, causes extreme air pollution.

FACTS ABOUT BOTH PAPER & PLASTIC:

1) In N.Y City, 1 less grocery bag per person would reduce waste by 5 million pounds!

2) Each reusable bag will save approx. 1000 plastic or paper bags over the span of its lifetime!

3) The production of paper bags creates 70% more pollution than plastic, but plastic bags create 4 times the solid waste -- enough to fill the Empire State building 2 1/2 times!

How can you help? It's simple. Use environmentally friendly, reusable bags.

By doing this you are helping to reduce the volume of waste in our expanding landfills, conserve our forests &
prevent the deaths of millions of sea turtles, whales & other marine mammals.

Encourage your friends & family to use reusable bags at the grocery store AND at the mall. Each step we all take will make a HUGE difference.
